The Belvoir Castle Flower and Garden show | 2021
CONCEPT | The border takes inspiration from Devonian hedgerows, appreciating the balance between human intervention and nature. We have looked at how local landscapes have a greater benefit within our own green spaces.
The planting uses a base of native planting mixed with more typical ‘ornamental’ plants to mimic the wide range of flower shapes and flora found in our native hedgerows. Speculating on how, with some human intervention and by giving nature space to breathe, it can be a benefit not only to us but more importantly the natural world that surrounds us.
A range of flower shapes can be important to attract a diverse range of wildlife as some wildlife can only collect pollen in specific flower shapes. By using a formula of planting similar to this it can be a simple starting point for inspiration for many of our own gardens, to attract more pollinating insects. Traditionally built by humans to ‘fence’ off an area but more often than not used by the natural fauna and flora as green highways we see this as a powerful demonstration of how working together can have positive benefits for everyone.
